What’s This Reiki All About?

August 6, 2010

Amy Carole

Becoming a certified Reiki practitioner has quickly transformed my life in ways that are nothing short of profound. I see things clearer, I am more grounded than ever and I have a sense calm that I have never been able to sustain over a long period of time until recently. The sense of calm is by far the most gratifying. If you’ve ever had one of those amazing yoga practices where you walk out in a blissful cloud and stay on that yoga high for a few hours, you know what I’m talking about! Well, I am starting to feel like that 24/7. Quite a strong statement, I know. But after just three weeks of practicing Reiki on myself twice daily and about 10 times on others, I can honestly say this has changed my life.

I know what you’re thinking. Ok, enough with the spiritual ramblings, what are you talking about??

Spiritual Life Force Energy people!!

In the words of the reiki master Margaret Ann Case:

The work “Reiki” is derived from two Japanese words “rei” and “ki”. Rei is usually translated as spirit, transcendent or a higher source. Ki is most often translated as vital energy or life force energy. Therefore, rei-ki means spiritual or transcendent life force energy or vital energy that comes from a higher source.

The reiki energy is focused by the practitioners to certain areas on or above the body using gentle, non-invasive hands-on techniques. The spiritual life force acts as a catalyst and reorganizes chaotic, stagnant, congested or de-vitalized areas into greater well-being, harmony and balance.

Reiki Practitioners have received training in techniques how to transmit this spiritual life force energy using the protocols of the Reiki System of Natural Healing. The Reiki System was founded and organized by Mikao Usui, a Buddhist monk, in Japan in the early 1920s.

Let’s move onto the good stuff.  So what can Reiki treatments do for you?

  1. Treat physical ailments (muscle or joint pain, for example) by allowing the reiki energy to induce a deep relaxation in the trouble areas
  2. Strengthen your body’s physical systems (digestion, circulatory, immune, etc.)
  3. Reduce emotional distress (current or past) that may be in the form of pain, anxiety, sorrow, anger, etc.
  4. Calming the mind so that it functions at a slower, more deliberate and efficient pace
  5. Imparting an overall sense of calm and connection with something greater than yourself

In short, to me this equates to feeling happier, calmer and less stressed.

People generally describe feeling extremely grounded and calm after a reiki session. It is not uncommon to go into a deep meditative state where you might feel as if you are sleeping, but still conscious. Many people experience visions of some sort, most commonly certain colors and light patterns behind closed eyes. In addition, because of the transmission of energy passing through between your body and the practitioner’s hands, you may experience a tingling sensation or even feel extreme heat or cold as the practitioner moves his/her hands to different area of your body. This is all completely normal! And very exciting.

I will never forget my first reiki treatments. Each experience was extremely effective both mentally and physically and ultimately led me to pursue my own training so I could treat myself and family/friends. As I practice on friends, I notice how different each person’s experience truly is. For example, one friend felt an intense tingling energy in her knees as did I in my hands while I treated her during a chair session. Afterward, she mentioned having had two knee surgeries. On another friend I felt a surge of energy while treating her right leg, only to have her tell me after that that leg had been bothering her for weeks. And yet another friend had a jolting revelation about what the future held for her.

Reiki is first and foremost a self-practice. But I have to say, it is beyond gratifying to guide other people in healing their physical and emotional states. As I enter my Reiki Two training next week, I will learn even more so I look forward to reporting back.

Oh — and there is an added bonus to being a practitioner — when you give Reiki you also receive!

Cheers to health & healing,

xoxo amy carole
